A Head Shot Session to be Proud of!

Yes, when if comes to photo shoots, I'll be honest, some of them make my heart sing just a teeny bit more than others, and yesterday was one of those days! I was lucky enough to have the lovely Ms. Kathryn Mock in my camera room for her own head shot session, and boy was I thrilled! Our paths first crossed a few months ago when I was participating in another collaboration event. The theme was Tim Burton and so when I first met Kathryn she was all dolled up in an interpretation of Helen Bonham Carter's 2008 Vogue UK shoot, and boy did she rock it!

Hair: Jocelyn Jones - MUA: Elaine Frank - Nails: Heather M. Mellott.

See what I mean! Just awesome! So, when I announced that I was bringing back my head shot session I invited her right away to come stand in front of my lens again, and I'm oh so glad I did!
Not only is Kathryn a natural beauty ...

Not only does she know how to work in front of a camera ...

but she is also a complete nut like me! We had such a blast!

Three reasons why you NEED a professional head shot.

Speaking of head shots, let's talk about the importance and value of having a professional image on your social media:

1. It ads credibility. Think about it, if you are a business professional seeking networking contacts and future business adventures, what says “I’m ready to work” better than a solid professional image of yourself? Have you ever stopped to think about what a selfie image says about you professionally? It can come across as saying “I’m a part time career person that doesn’t take my self seriously, but hey, don’t worry, I’ll take you seriously.” … Um, yeah NO!!!! Taking the time to invest in your professional appearance lets others know that you are serious about yourself and that you will be just as serious about them.

2.  A good shot lets people know who the real “YOU” is. Yep, a strong head shot will not only help to put your best face forward (pun intended here!) but an exquisite shot will exude confidence AND approachability! Even if you are not a camera ham by nature, a great portrait will not only hide that fact, but it can also accentuate that you are willing to step out of your personal box … and potential clients will subconsciously think to themselves  This person can conquer anything … surely they will be great for our team!” Hiring a professional photographer isn't just about finding a person with lots of expensive gear, it's about finding a person who has the skills to bring out the best YOU in every shot. As I like to say, it's your job to be good at what you do, and it's MY job to make you look good at it!

3. And lastly, a good head shot will show that you are a person of the times ... invested in today AND tomorrow’s future. Nothing says “I’m stuck in the past” bigger than a tired old photo of you taken 5+ years ago! Yikes! Just like your personal branding image, your social appearance should be relevant and prove that you have a willingness to celebrate the past but you are also ready to rock out the future. This is why men should consider revamping their head shots at least every 2-3 years, and for the gals it could be every one to two years, depending on how much their looks change with the current fashion trends.

So there you have it … my Top three go-to reasons why you should have a professional head shot ASAP, and to echo that great credit card slogan … “What’s in YOUR portfolio?

When you are ready (and I hope by now you understand the importance of how much you need to be), send me a message today and lets do this thing!!!

Some fun with faces

While reintroducing my head shot studio work again I had the pleasure of shooting Kansas City's own funny man, Patrick Ryan again. This is the second time I've had the pleasure of having him in front of my camera ... and as usual, he totally rocked out the session! Knowing in advance that he was a pro and that we were gonna be able to rock out the images in no time, I had a sudden spark of an idea to play a little with him after we got "the" shots done. But, before I get on to that here's what as few of his many awesome final shots looked like ...

Yep, PERFECTION! So, like I said, I knew I was going to have some time to play and I knew that he trusted me and my crazy visions, so after these were captured, it was time to play around. A few years ago I was first introduced to Patrick while he was an opening MC at a local comedy club and now he's decided to take his mad skills to the next level .. acting. With that in mind, and knowing of his awesomely wide range of facial expressions, I had an idea to create a new Facebook cover image to showcase his many faces.

To set up for my final vision, I turned on the studio light to my camera right and had him start off facing a large reflector placed at his face on camera left. Then we started making some images of him making several goofy faces as he slowly turned towards my camera ... one silly shot at a time. Then, for the "main" image I had him hold still and peer right down the barrel of my lens.

Here's a few of the "rotating" shots ...

From there, I started with a blank template that was specific to Facebook dimensions and ultimately came up with this final image. All things being equal, and for a quick impromptu idea, I am totally digging how it turned out! This is proof positive to me that one should never stop playing and we should never take ourselves to seriously either ;)

My 1st Head Shot session of 2017!

It has only been a week into the new year and I already had a chance to use my newest studio room for a head shot session! This adorable little man and I had a full hour blocked out together and yet we nailed the session in 30 minutes! BAMM!!!! Talk about awesomeness! Here's a quick little behind the scenes shot and video taken by my little model's mom, Amber ... (Thanks so much for sharing this with me dear! You guys are the best!)

Here's a quick cell phone shot of us together ...

This is a quick little video that mom took ... don't worry, it straightens up after a few seconds! LOL!

And right at the end of the video clip, this is the shot we got ... so adorable!

This little aspiring model/actor is just too cute for words and at a tender 6 years old, he sure could bring on the charm when on set!

If you are looking for a child model/actor, please let me know and I'll hook you up with this dolls parents :)

A look at 2016 from my camera.

So, with the start of a new year, I decided to take a moment to step back and look at some of my favorite images I captured in 2016 ... here's a few of my personal favorites, in no particular order ... If nothing else, it can be said that my photo shoots were quite diverse! I can only imagine what 2017 will bring for me and my camera.

That being said, I can say that I plan on bringing back my head shot sessions now that I have a mini studio again! Also, I can't wait to play in the water again this year. It feels like every time I got in the pool with my camera in hand, I got better with each shoot. Water photography sure isn't easy, but it is definitely oh-so addictive! And yes, there WILL be more photography workshops that I'll be hosting! Oh, and one more thing ... I can't wait to do some more light painting photography once the weather gets warmer again in the evenings.

Until then, here's some photos to enjoy while I prep for the new year! I can't wait to show you what I'm working on next!

The light painting project is taking shape.

It's been almost a year and a half since I have been able to see, much less get to, one half of my garage and yet, with great excitement & glee I have finally been able to get it emptied out! Why all the excitement for me? Besides being able to finally find that long lost box of our favorite DVD's? LOL! Well, it's so I can convert the space into a mini studio! It's been way to long since I've had a studio space in my home and now that I've got the chance to have one again, I find myself hardly being able to focus on anything else! (The kids can feed them selves from now on, right?!?! LOL!)

In all seriousness though, the poll-swimming days of summer have sadly come to an end, and so now I am on to the next project that can keep my busy during the long winter days ahead. I figured this would be the PERFECT time for me to start some painting with light imagery!

What is painting with light you ask? (PWL) It's a type of photography that is shot in the dark (like pitch black dark!) and while the camera's shutter is left open in the dark you 'paint' in front of the lens with a light source ... or two or three ... or more! The choices for light tools is endless, especially when you consider the possibility of getting garage-ghetto and creating some of your own!

Here's a few quick test runs so far that I've created. These were all done mostly so that I could test out some ideas and get some color themes hammered out as I prep to take on the challenge of incorporating actual models in the shots! Too fun! Be sure to follow this blog and watch where these PWL test shots take me. And don't worry, I'll be posting some behind the scenes videos soon just so you can see what it is that I'm actually doing to create these colorful images. Until then, please feel free to leave me a comment if ya like ... :)

Another great shoot in the water

Fall might be knocking at our doors but that doesn't mean that I can't squeak in a few more underwater sessions! Especially since this time we are in one of my models heated pool! Talk about an awesome experience! She had that baby cranked up to 92* and it was WONDERFUL! I sooooo need to get a heater installed in our pool at home!

But, I digress ... on to the shoot. This photoshoot let me work with one of my favorite galls, Amanda Pierce, who is less than two weeks away from jetting off to China with her mother for two years. YEARS!!! How am I gonna live without my favorite girl!?!?!?! I'm not sure how yet, but at least I got one more chance to work with her and this time she introduced me to her lovely friend Ms Clara Simkins! Double yay!!!!

Here a glance at the behind the scenes of our shoot.

Ok, and now for some of the final image! Talk about some stunning shots! And my Ms Amanda gets stronger and stronger every time we work together in the water! LOVE it!
